Database News You Can UseJuly 2000
A monthly newsletter for Oracle users
from Database Specialists, a consulting firm
specializing in Oracle technology
In this issue:
Chris Lawson, Senior Oracle DBA at Database Specialists, will lead a technical session next month titled “Setting Up A Hot Standby Database.” Chris will show you how improvements in Oracle8i make it possible to increase fault tolerance and offload reporting demand with a standby database. See Chris’ presentation at the Northern California Oracle User’s Group (NoCOUG) on Thursday, August 17, 2000 at Chevron in San Ramon.
NoCOUG is dedicated to the education and representation of those who work with Oracle Corporation’s database software and tools. For more information on this meeting or the NoCOUG organization, visit http://www.nocoug.org
Orca is a tool for plotting arbitrary data from text files onto a directory on a Web server. It monitors operating system statistics and creates graphical representations of various useful pieces of information such as CPU usage, TCP interface bits per second, I/O rate, memory usage, and disk space availability. Orca can be easily extended to plot any data–from weather statistics to database performance reports.
Igor Gurovich, Oracle DBA at Database Specialists, has been using Orca to publish database performance statistics such as datafile I/O, user calls and parses, sorts, and transaction rates for production Oracle databases he manages. Igor will be sharing his techniques for integrating Oracle databases with Orca in the near future. Stay tuned!

At last month’s in-house DBA Roundtable, Database Specialists’ president Roger Schrag led a discussion on encrypting Oracle network traffic so that confidential data can be sent over an insecure network such as the internet. Oracle offers Advanced Security Services for this purpose. However, the widely available ssh (secure shell) protocol may be configured very easily to encrypt Net8 traffic between a client and database server, or among multiple database servers. ssh is extremely secure, while much easier to set up and far less expensive than Oracle’s Advanced Security Services.
Our popular step-by-step guide, “Installing and Configuring Oracle on the Linux Platform” has been updated! This is a highly technical and detailed guide to installing Oracle 8i Release 2 (version 8.1.6) on the Red Hat Linux platform. Written by Database Specialists’ president Roger Schrag, this document is a great resource for companies that want to get Oracle up and running quickly, and also want their database to be scalable and to perform well.
