At Oracle OpenWorld in 1998, Bhaskar Himatsingka and Juan Loaiza of Oracle Corporation gave a presentation entitled “How to Stop Defragmenting and Start Living: The Definitive Word on Fragmentation.” Recently updated for Oracle 8i and available on the Oracle Technology Network website, this paper details a set of best practices for sizing database objects in order to minimize DBA maintenance tasks and reduce fragmentation. A “must read” for all Oracle DBAs! Download it now at http://technet.oracle.com/deploy/availability/pdf/defrag.pdf
Oracle OpenWorld is coming to San Francisco in October, and Database Specialists’ founder, Roger Schrag, will be leading two sessions. These are titled: “Use EXPLAIN PLAN and TKPROF To Tune Your Applications” and “Get Oracle 8i Running on Your Linux Server Straight Away!” Register for the conference before August 31 and receive a discount on your registration fees.

At our August Database Specialists team DBA Roundtable, consultant Danny Chow shared his expertise on partitioning. The partitioning option of Oracle 8i allows you to divide very large tables and indexes into smaller objects in a way that is transparent to the application. This can enhance parallelism and performance, while easing maintenance and minimizing down time.
While the concept of partitioning data is simple enough, it does get a bit complicated when you consider the many indexing strategies available. And then there are the bugs and “undocumented features.” In summary: Partitioning is a great feature for large databases, but plan and test thoroughly before you deploy!
At the August Northern California Oracle Users Group meeting, Database Specialists team member and senior Oracle DBA Chris Lawson shared his expertise about Oracle’s managed standby database feature, which can help increase your system’s fault tolerance and availability. This presentation, among many others, is available on our website.
